FDA Warns – Frito-Lay recalls select 13 oz. bags of Classic Potato Chips after finding undeclared milk in the product

Frito-Lay is recalling at least one lot of their 13-ounce bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips after receiving reports of undeclared milk in the product. According to the FDA, the company announced the recall on Monday, December 16th.

The 13-ounce bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips (UPC # 28400 31041) are sold in a yellow bag that says, “Lay’s Classic PARTY SIZE.” The recalled bags were sold to stores and distributors in Oregon and Washington. The bags have likely been on the market since November 3rd. The “Best by” or “Guaranteed Fresh” date on the recalled items is 11 FEB 2025. Along with this date, the recalled bags include one of the following two manufacturing codes: 6462307xx or 6463307xx. No other lots of Lay’s chips are being recalled at this time.

Frito-Lay has not received any reports thus far of injury or illness related to the recalled products. The company says that they were alerted to a potential issue with undeclared milk ingredients in the chips. It’s not yet clear if the problem resulted from a manufacturing or packaging error, nor has the company clarified how they plan to avoid the issue going forward.

According to Mayo Clinic, milk allergies are particularly common in children but can also impact adults. When a person with a daily allergy or severe sensitivity consumes dairy, they can experience a variety of symptoms including gastrointestinal upset with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea; skin rash; swelling of the face; congestion; and wheezing. In serious cases, an allergic reaction can result in anaphylaxis. If untreated, anaphylaxis can be fatal.

Frito-Lay advises customers to check the “Guaranteed Fresh” date on their chips along with the manufacturing code and to refrain from consuming any recalled items.

Anyone with questions or concerns about the recall, or who would like to discuss a possible refund, can contact Frito-Lay Consumer Relations at 1-800-352-4477. The company is available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., CST.
