FDA warns – Fresh-cut cantaloupe products recalled by Vinyard Fruit and Vegetable Company due to potential trace of Salmonella

Vinyard Fruit and Vegetable Company, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, has voluntarily recalled fresh-cut cantaloupe products under twelve different codes because they may be contaminated with Salmonella, reports the FDA.

While the organism can produce a relatively short-term infection in healthy individuals–as exhibited by fever, diarrhea (bloody or otherwise), nausea, vomiting, and pain of the abdomen–an infection can turn especially serious and possibly fatal in young children, elderly people, and those with compromised immune systems. A Salmonella infection has also been known, in rare cases, to advance into more serious conditions; in such cases, the organism enters the bloodstream, resulting in arterial infections (as in infected aneurysms), endocarditis, arthritis, and other severe illnesses.

Vinyard Fruit and Vegetable Company announced the recall on November 14, 2023, after its cantaloupe supplier, Nogales, Arizona-based Sophia Foods, LLC (DBA TruFresh) recalled its fresh, whole cantaloupes on November 8, 2023. Officials say Sophia Foods, LLC was prompted to take action after receiving a notification from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency concerning a possible Salmonella contamination.

While Vinyard Fruit and Vegetable Company has not been made aware of any related illnesses to date, the recall covers a range of products sold and distributed between October 30, 2023 and November 10, 2023, within the state of Oklahoma via retail and wholesale partners.
