According to the FDA, Enoki King Mushroom Farm has recalled one lot of Enoki Mushrooms due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The company announced the recall on Friday, October 11th.
The lot number for the recalled product is 4877, and the UPC code is 860011505600. The product is sold in a 5.3-ounce plastic package that has a blue wrap-around label. The front of the package reads “Enoki Mushrooms” and “Champignons d’ enoki.” Customers can find the lot number in black ink on the back of the package, along with the UPC. The mushrooms were sent from California and New York to retail locations throughout the United States.
The company has not received any reports thus far of injury or death in connection to its Enoki Mushrooms. Enoki King initiated the recall after routine testing found Listeria monocytogenes in a sample from Lot 4877. The company has since halted distribution of the product while they work to find and resolve the source of contamination.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, eating foods that are contaminated with listeria monocytogenes can cause an infection called listeriosis. Listeriosis is mild for most people but can cause more serious illness in very young children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems. Infection can cause a variety of symptoms, including fever, gastrointestinal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and body aches. In pregnant women, listeriosis can lead to “miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth and death in newborn babies.”
Enoki King Mushroom Farm urges customers who may have purchased mushrooms from lot 4877 to return the product to the point of purchase for a full refund.
Anyone with questions can contact the company Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm (PST) at (718) 290-6617.
