FDA warns – Elevation Foods discovers labeling error, recalls Hannaford Seafood Salads with undisclosed soy ingredients

Discovery of an undiscovered allergen has prompted R. Walters LLC, known publicly as Elevation Foods, to recall 1,668 units of their Hannaford Seafood Salad. The FDA published notice of the company’s announcement on Thursday, October 31st.

Elevation Foods announced the recall after discovering that the affected lots of Hannaford Seafood Salads were mislabeled due to a printing error. The labels used do not list soy even though soy is an ingredient in the current recipe for the Hannaford Seafood Salads. The company points towards an “upcoming formulation change” as a possible explanation for the printing error.

The recalled items were distributed between October 25th and October 29th to Hannaford stores in five states in the northeastern portion of the United States, including New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, and New York. The UPC for the Hannaford Seafood Salad is 0 41268 25161 2, which is printed alongside the bar code on the product. The salad is sold in a 12-ounce, square plastic container that features the Hannaford logo and reads, “seafood salad.” The “use by” dates included in the recall are “BB 11/13/2024” and “BB 11/14/2024.” Customers can find these dates stamped on the containers. Hannaford has removed the product from their shelves, but customers should be sure to check the “best by” dates on any seafood salads they may have purchased prior to the recall announcement.

Thus far, Elevation Foods has not received any reports of illness or injury connected to the recalled seafood salads. Still, consumption of soy can cause illness for people with a soy allergy or sensitivity. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, soy allergies are more common in infants and children but can continue into adulthood. Common symptoms of an allergic reaction to soy might include, gastrointestinal upset with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea; skin rash; congestion; shortness of breath; swelling of the mouth; and cough. More rarely, an allergic reaction to soy can lead to anaphylaxis, or the closing of the airways. Left untreated, anaphylaxis can be fatal.

The company urges customers to return the recalled products to their local Hannaford store for a full refund.

Anyone with questions or concerns about the recall can contact Elevation Foods Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm at +1 (978) 646-8950 x 104.
