According to the FDA, Eagle Produce LLC out of Scottsdale, AZ, is recalling one lot of Kandy-branded whole cantaloupe due to potential contamination with Salmonella. The recall applies to 224 cases of whole cantaloupe distributed and sold between August 13th and August 17th in Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Texas and Virginia.
Eagle Produce LLC announced the recall on Friday, September 6th, after routine testing performed by the State of Michigan detected Salmonella in the cantaloupe. The product carries a red sticker that reads “USA KANDY E.U.” at the top and “4050 CANTALOUPE/CANTALOUP” at the bottom below the bar code. The lot number for the product is 846648, and the UPC is 4050.
While the company has not received any reports of illness thus far, Salmonella contamination can present serious risks, especially for children, the elderly, and the immunocompromised. Salmonella is a bacterium that typically originates in human or animal feces. Eating food that is contaminated with Salmonella can cause “fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and abdominal pain.” In more severe infections, Salmonella infection can become systemic, causing “arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
Eagle Produce LLC and the FDA warn consumers to dispose of whole cantaloupes from the recalled lot (846648). Customers with questions can call Eagle Produce LLC, Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm PST, at 1-800-627-8674.
Anyone with signs of illness after consuming the recalled product should see a health care provider from proper diagnosis and treatment.
