FDA Warns – Dierbergs Markets recalls 16oz Premium Home-Style Mashed Potatoes due to undeclared wheat

Dierbergs Markets out of Missouri issued a recall on Friday for one lot of their 16oz Premium Home-Style Mashed Potatoes. As explained by the FDA, the company found that the specified lot contains undeclared wheat, which poses a risk for people with Celiac disease and wheat or gluten allergies.

Dierbergs sells their Premium Home-Style Mashed Potatoes (UPC # 231220006538) in a plastic “to go” container with a clear lid and black bottom. A white label featuring the Dierbergs Market brand logo is affixed to the product lid. The lot of mashed potatoes included in the recall has a “Sell by” date of January 09, 2025, and a label ID number of 92. Customers can find the label ID number printed above the UPC code on the product label. The “Sell by” date is printed in the lower right section of the product label.

Dierbergs Markets distributed the affected product to 25 retail stores in 16 cities in Missouri and Illinois. The stores selling the product are as follows: Southroads (St. Louis), Four Seasons (Chesterfield), Warson Woods (St. Louis), Manchester (Manchester), West Oak (Creve Coeur), Clarkson (Ellisville), Arnold (Arnold), Lemay (St. Louis), Bogey Hills (St. Charles), Florissant (Florissant), Marketplace (Chesterfield), Mackenzie Pointe (St. Louis), Telegraph (St. Louis), Heritage Place (Creve Coeur), 94 Crossing (St. Peters), Deer Creek (O’Fallon), Fenton (Fenton), Brentwood (St. Louis), Green Mount (Shiloh, IL), Wildwood (Wildwood), 79 Crossing (St. Peters), Wentzville (Wentzville), Edwardsville (Edwardsville, IL), Lake St. Louis (Lake St. Louis), and Crestwood (Sappington). Dierbergs says that all of the affected products have been removed from store shelves.

It’s unclear if Dierbergs has received any reports of illness or injury connected to the recalled product. According to Mayo Clinic, a wheat allergy or sensitivity can cause reactions that range from mild to serious. Symptoms might include, gastrointestinal pain or upset, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, congestion, skin rash or swelling, headache, itching or irritation in the mouth or throat, and anaphylaxis. If left untreated, anaphylaxis can be fatal. Wheat also triggers reactions in people with Celiac disease, which involves an “abnormal immune system reaction” to the gluten protein in wheat.

Dierbergs Markets asks consumers to return unopened containers of their 16oz Premium Home-Style Mashed Potatoes to the point of purchase for a full refund.

Anyone with questions or concerns about the recall can contact Dierbergs Markets Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CST at (636) 532-8884.
