FDA Warns – Concern over possible Listeria contamination prompts recall of Jack and the Green Sprouts Alfalfa Sprouts

Last Friday, Jack and the Green Sprouts, Inc. of Wisconsin recalled one lot of their 5-ounce packaged Alfalfa sprouts. The FDA attributes the recall to concerns over possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Jack and the Green Sprouts, Inc. says the recall only applies to Lot 687 of their Alfalfa sprouts (UPC # 763247198915). The item expired on 1/29/25 and has been removed from all retail shelves. The company distributed the sprouts to grocery stores and retailers in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Customers can recognize the product by the clear plastic packaging marked with the green logo from Jack and the Green Sprouts and the slogan, “WITHOUT ANY DOUBT, EXCELLENT SPROUTS!” Customers can find both the UPC and Lot numbers marked on the top of the package.

The company has not received any reports of illness connected to the recalled lot of Alfalfa sprouts. Jack and the Green Sprouts, Inc. initiated the recall after the State of Minnesota confirmed a positive test for Listeria in a sample of sprouts from Lot 687. The company arranged for independent testing of the product, reporting a negative result for Listeria both in the sprouts and in the spent irrigation water. Jack and the Green Sprouts emphasizes that they are recalling the product as a precautionary measure.

In healthy people, infection with Listeria typically causes symptoms such as gastrointestinal upset, fever, diarrhea, joint pain, and headache. These symptoms usually resolve without medical intervention. Listeria infection can be dangerous, however, in more vulnerable populations, such as young children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems. Additionally, Listeria infection is very dangerous for pregnant women because it is linked to miscarriage and stillbirth.

Jack and the Green Sprouts, Inc. advises customers to refrain from eating any remaining packages of their Alfalfa sprouts from Lot 687.

Anyone with questions or concerns about the recall can contact the company directly Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at (715) 425-9495.
