According to the FDA, Hallandale, Florida-based North Fish USA Inc. has recalled its 9-ounce packages of imported “Cold Smoked Capelin” following a routine inspection conducted by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Foods Inspectors and then a later analysis by staff from Food Laboratory.
Initiated by the company on August 5, 2024, and announced on the FDA site on August 8, 2024, the recall covers products that were discovered to exceed 5 inches in length and to be un-eviscerated, eliciting concern that they may carry a risk for a Clostridium botulinum contamination. Officials noted that fish sold in this manner may contain spores, which tend to concentrate mainly in the viscera of fish. Because the bacterium may lead to a life-threatening condition or possibly death, consumers are asked to refrain from using the product despite its look and smell.
Typical symptoms brought on by botulism, a type of food poisoning that has a potential to turn fatal, includes: “general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing.” It’s also common to experience trouble breathing, muscle weakness, a distended abdomen, and constipation. Anyone who has exhibited these symptoms after consuming the fish is urged to contact their medical provider immediately.
Imported from Belarus and distributed in New York and Georgia for further distribution to East Coast retail stores, North Fish USA Inc. “Cold Smoke Capelin” comes packaged in white plastic tray with a clear front display and a white label bearing UPC (Universal Product Code) 4811527003360. Affected packages will have the “best before” date of either “07.13.2024” or “01.05.2025” stamped in the back.
While North Fish USA Inc. has not received any reports of illness in connection to the recall to date, anyone who may have purchased an affected product should not consume it. The item may be returned to the point of purchase for a complete refund. Questions and concerns may be directed to the company at (954) 251-2021. Calls are monitored Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
