FDA warns – Church Brothers LLC recalls 4 lots of green onions after Canadian Inspection Agency finds salmonella in sample

Church Brothers LLC is recalling at least four lots of green onions in the United States and Canada. The FDA reports that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency found evidence of Salmonella contamination in a sample of the product during a routine inspection.

The company issued the announcement on Friday, October 18th. The recall pertains to about 1271 cases of green onions distributed to Canada and to eleven states in the U.S., including Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia. Church Brothers LLC has not received any reports of illness thus far in connection to the recalled onions.

In the U.S. the brands involved in the Church Brothers recall include Trader Joe’s (Lot # CB272378; Pack Date 092524), Church Brothers (Lot # CB272378), and Imperial Fresh (Lot # CB272378). The green onions from Trader Joe’s are sold in a clear bag with the Trader Joe’s brand printed at the top. Customers can find the “Pack date” printed on a green sticker on the back of the bag. The green onions sold under the Church Brothers brand are also packed in a clear bag. The front of the bag includes a stamp that reads “Green Onion Iceless 4 x 2 lb.” The lot number follows this descriptor with the prefix “D269 -.” The identifier for the Imperial Brand of green onions also reads “Green Onions Iceless,” and includes the same formatting for the lot number.

According to the Mayo Clinic, infection with Salmonella bacteria causes salmonellosis. This infection is typically mild in healthy individuals but may cause fever, stomach cramping, and diarrhea. The main risk with these symptoms is dehydration. The infection can be riskier in very young children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems. Complications might include “reactive arthritis” or bacteremia, in which the infection enters the bloodstream and infects tissues and organs.

Church Brothers LLC has notified the appropriate retail stores and distributors of the recall. They advise customers who may have purchased the recalled onions to throw them away instead of eating them.

Anyone with questions or concerns about the recall can Church Brothers Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. PST at 1-877-590-0428. The company is also available by email at consumerinfo@churchbrothers.com.
