On Monday, Borsari Food Company announced a recall of its Bloody Mary Mix after state officials notified the company of undeclared allergens in the product. According to the FDA, the product contains both fish and soy, neither of which are listed on the label.
Borsari’s Bloody Mary Mix is sold in a clear, 32-ounce bottle with a black label that features both the brand and product names in white lettering and the slogan, “The World’s Best.” All lots of the Bloody Mary Mix with UPC 815893000101 are included in the recall. Borsari distributed the product through their website and to retailers within 100 miles of Jamestown, NY. The company is working to contact all retailers and online customers to notify them of the recall. Borsari has not yet provided a date range for the distribution of the product.
No illnesses have been reported thus far in connection to the recalled product. Officials with the New York State Department of Agriculture discovered the labelling issue during a routine inspection. Borsari then confirmed that their Bloody Mary Mix does, in fact, contain both anchovies and soy. The company commits to correcting the labels on all current and future inventory to account for the fish and soy ingredients in their Bloody Mary Mix.
According to the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Connection Team, allergies to finned fish are more common in adults than in children. Additionally, allergic reactions to finned fish are often serious enough to require serious medical intervention. Without intervention, allergic reactions to fish can be fatal. For this reason, the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) requires companies to list all fish ingredients on packaged food products.
Furthermore, as noted by the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, companies must also list soy ingredients on their products. Soy allergies are more common in children but can continue into adulthood. Allergic symptoms can include gastrointestinal upset with nausea, vomiting, and cramping; congestion; rash; shortness of breath; and swelling. In more serious instances, a reaction might cause a weak pulse, dizziness, or confusion. In rare instances, a patient might experience anaphylaxis.
Borsari advises customers who may have purchased the recalled item to return it to the point of purchase for a refund or replacement.
