FDA Warns – Blue Ridge Beef recalls 1 lot of Natural Mix dog food logs after samples test positive for Salmonella

Late last week, Blue Ridge Beef out of North Carolina announced a recall of one lot, or 5,700 lbs., of their 2-pound Natural Mix logs for dogs. According to the FDA, samples from the recalled lot tested positive for contamination with Salmonella.

The company distributed the impacted product between January 3rd and January 24th, 2025, through retailers in eight states in the U.S., including Connecticut, New York, Maryland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Virginia. The UPC for the 2-pound Natural Mix is 854298001054, and the lot # indicated in the recall is N25/12/31. The Natural Mix dog food logs are packaged in a white and grey wrapper with blue and brown trim. The packaging features the Blue Ridge label with the name of the product, advising customers to “Keep Frozen Until Ready for Use.” Customers can find the lot number stamped on the clip at the end of the log. The UPC is printed along the bar code on the package.

Blue Ridge Beef has not indicated whether they have received reports of illness linked to the recalled product. The company received notice late last month that samples collected on January 8th by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture tested positive for Salmonella. The recall only applies to lot number N25/12/31 of the 2-pound Natural Mix logs of dog food; other Blue Ridge Beef products are not implicated in the recall.

Both pets and the humans that care for them can become sickened by exposure to Salmonella bacteria. In animals, symptoms often include lack of energy, reduced appetite, diarrhea, and vomiting. If these symptoms persist or worsen, a veterinarian should be consulted. Even pets without symptoms can be carriers of Salmonella infection if they were exposed to or consumed a contaminated product.

Humans can become ill from contact with infected animals or from touching surfaces that have come in contact with the contaminated product. Salmonella infection in healthy adults typically involves gastrointestinal upset with fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. These infections are usually self-limiting but can become more serious in young children, the elderly, or the immunocompromised. In these rare cases, infection can lead to “arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.”

Blue Ridge Beef advises customers to return the recalled product to the point of purchase for a full refund or to dispose of it safely. Customers should disinfect pet bowls and any other surfaces that may have come in contact with the product.
