FDA warns – Avole Inc. recalls Bacalaitos Criollos Codfish Frying Mix due to labeling error, undeclared fish

According to the FDA, the Puerto Rican company Avole Inc. (Productos Nita) is recalling at least one lot of their Bacalaitos Criollos Codfish Frying Mix due to the omission of “pollock” (fish) from the list of ingredients. For those with an allergy or sensitivity, consumption of the product will likely result in exposure to fish and fish products.

Avole Inc. announced the recall on Thursday, September 19. The recall applies to all 7- ounce bags of Bacalaitos Criollos Codfish Frying Mix with the item number of 310925 and an Expiration/Use By date of 06/2025. The product was distributed in the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico.  The company plans to correct the label on the product to list pollock as an ingredient.

Bacalaitos Criollos Codfish Frying Mix is sold in a clear bag with the slogan, “Productos NITA! CON EL SABOR DE AQUÍ!” The name of the product is then printed with an illustration of how the product might look when prepared as directed. The back of the bag includes the list of ingredients along with the nutritional information. Customers can find the item number, UPC, and expiration date printed on the back of the product.

According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, an allergy to finned fish is less common than other allergies but can cause serious complications. Almost half of all people with a fish allergy developed the allergy as an adult. Exposure to fish can cause many symptoms, including skin rash; digestive upset with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea; congestion; asthma; and in the most extreme cases, anaphylaxis.

Avole Inc. encourages consumers who have purchased the designated mix and who have an allergy or sensitivity to fish to avoid opening or eating the product. Customers can return the product to the point of purchase for a full refund.

Anyone with questions about the recall can contact Liliana Rodriguez at Liana’s Food at (787) 225-7282, Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-4:00pm EST.
