The FDA is alerting the public to a recall of cinnamon initiated by Asli Fine Foods of Woodridge, IL. The company announced the recall of one lot of its 7 oz packets of Asli cinnamon powder after detection of lead in the product.
Asli Fine Foods announced the recall on Thursday, August 29th, and specified a lot # of DDDLUS with the UPC # 703440150723. According to the announcement, Asli distributed the cinnamon to retailers in Minnesota, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and Ohio. The distribution date(s) of the product are not listed in the FDA alert, so consumers should check the lot and UPC numbers printed on the product label.
Consumers can find a visual of the recalled item on the FDA website. The product was distributed in a plastic container with a white label on the front that reads “asli CINNAMON POWDER 7 oz (200 gms).” The product label features a yellow border. The bottom of the label reads, “Distributed by: Asli Fine Foods, Woodbridge, IL, 50517, www.aslifinefoods.com.”
Asli Fine Foods announced the recall after routine sampling by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services found lead in the cinnamon powder. While no adverse health effects have been reported as of August 29th, the company will stop production and distribution until they can determine the source of the contamination and guarantee its removal.
Repeated exposure to or ingestion of lead can cause a variety of adverse health effects and is particularly dangerous for children, in whom sufficient exposure over weeks or months can cause “permanent damage to the central nervous system.” In adults, limited exposure to low levels of lead may not produce symptoms but may result in elevated blood levels. A larger or more prolonged exposure to lead can cause more significant health issues in adults, including “kidney dysfunction, hypertension, and neurocognitive effects.”
Asli Fine Foods requests that customers who purchased cinnamon from lot # DDDLUS with UPC # 703440150723 return the product to the point of purchase for a full refund.
The company is available for questions from the public at 630-739-1599.
