FDA warns – ANSWERS recalls 4 lots of of beef and chicken dog food after FDA sampling finds listeria and salmonella

The FDA is reporting a recall initiated by Lystn, LLC., known on the market as ANSWERS, of four lots of dog food due to potential contamination with Salmonella and Listeria. The recall applies to specific lots of the company’s beef and chicken dog foods.

ANSWERS announced the recall on Sunday, September 22, after FDA sampling confirmed the presence of Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes in the product. The recall includes two lots of ANSWERS Pet Food Detailed Beef Formula for Dogs (UPC 856554002102 and UPC 856554002072) and two lots of ANSWERS Pet Food Straight Chicken Formula for Dogs (UPC 856554002065). The Lot Codes for the beef formula are BUBD MAY 06, 2026 and BUBD JAN 31, 2026 with expiration dates of MAY 06, 2026 and JAN 31, 2026. The Lot Code for the chicken formula is BUBD JAN 31, 2026 with expiration dates of JAN 02, 2026 and MAR 11, 2026. All four products contain four pounds of dog food, sold in half-gallon cartons and distributed online and via retailers throughout the United States.

The company has not reported any human or animal illnesses connected to these products. Both Salmonella and Listeria can cause illness in dogs, with symptoms that include diarrhea and vomiting, blood in the stool, lethargy, decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Perhaps more concerning, pets exposed to Salmonella and Listeria can expose humans, in whom symptoms of infection tend to be more serious. Humans can also be at risk for developing infections from handling dog food contaminated with Salmonella and Listeria.

In humans, Listeria infection can cause “fever, headache, muscle aches, stiff neck, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.” Salmonella infection can cause the same digestive symptoms as well vomiting and blood in the stool. In some rare instances, salmonella infection can cause more serious symptoms, such as “arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.” Pregnant women, children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems are at a greater risk.

The FDA asks that consumers discard of the affected product in sealed plastic bags so as to minimize wildlife exposure and further spread of infection. Gloves should be worn when handling the product, and customers should disinfect all surfaces that may have come in contact with the affected dog food.
