FDA warns – ALB Flavor Ground Cinnamon recalled due to potential for elevated lead levels

According to the FDA, Bronx, New York-based ALB-USA Enterprises, Inc. has recalled its ALB Flavor-branded Cinnamon Powder after an analysis by the Connecticut Agriculture Experiment Station (CAES) indicated that the product may contain above-normal levels of lead.

Consumers should be aware that those who are exposed to low levels of lead for a short term may not exhibit symptoms, and often times the only indication of lead exposure is an increase in blood lead levels. Those who undergo an “acute exposure” to a significant level of lead or those who are exposed to the metal chronically are more likely show signs and symptoms. Depending on the level and duration of the exposure, as well as a person’s age and body weight, lead can go on to impact almost every system in the body.

In children, a protracted period (weeks to months) of exposure to lead may cause irreversible nervous system damage. This could then lead to long-term health problems such as learning disorders and developmental defects. Adults who are chronically exposed to lead typically suffer “kidney dysfunction, hypertension, and neurocognitive effects.”

Announced by the company on July 26, 2024, the recall covers ALB Flavor brand Ground Cinnamon under Lot number LA02. Affected products were distributed to and made available for purchase at retailers across four U.S. states (New York, Connecticut, Michigan, and Massachusetts) as early as December 15, 2022, and as recently as May 13, 2024.

The finished product under the ALB Flavor brand comes in a plastic bag that totals to 100 grams net weight, with an outer brown carton packaging bearing an image of two cinnamon sticks and cinnamon powder on the bottom-center.

As shown in product photos included in the FDA announcement, the back of the package reveals the origin of the product (Indonesia), a description of cinnamon, and a QR code that links to recipes. The product’s Universal Product Code (UPC 5304000333362), the “best before” date of “30/08/2025”, and the Lot number LA02 can also be found on the backside.

Since the discovery of the potential metal contamination, ALB-USA Enterprises has paused all import and distribution of the product. The company is working with the FDA on an investigation into the origin of the issue.

While officials have not received any reports of illness in connection with the recall to date, anyone who may have purchased ALB FLAVOR Ground Cinnamon is asked to refrain from consuming it. Those seeking a complete refund may return the item to the point of purchase.

Further recall-related questions may be directed to ALB-USA Enterprises at 917-922-5627, or 929-431-8505. Calls are monitored Mondays through Fridays, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
