FDA warns – 640 packs of Bikano Moong Dal, 350g, recalled due to potential Salmonella contamination

Hayward, California-based Thal Golden Spices Inc. has recalled 640 packs of its Bikano-branded Moong Dal, 350g, after the company learned that the product was released on the market “without proper lab results,” according to the FDA, and therefore has the potential to be contaminated with the organism Salmonella.

While healthy individuals infected with Salmonella typically undergo short-term symptoms like fever, (potentially bloody) diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and pain in the abdomen, those with weakened immune systems–such as young children and elderly people–could be subjected to more serious, life-threatening infections. While rare, there are also circumstances under which a Salmonella infection may cause the organism to enter the bloodstream, causing a patient’s condition to advance into arterial infections (as in the case of infected aneurysms), endocarditis, as well as arthritis, among other more severe illnesses.

Initiated by Thal Golden Spices Inc. on August 4, 2024, the recall covers Bikano products under the name “Moong Dal Plain,” which come in a 350-gram package stamped with “Best Used By” date June 25, 2025, which can be located on the reverse side of the pack, at the bottom. Affected products were made available for purchase at retail stores in the state of California.

Officials were first alerted to the issue following an inspection conducted by the FDA, which revealed inconsistencies in the company’s record of the batches meant to be destroyed, and therefore an oversight in the distribution of the products. The discovery has since prompted an internal investigation in an effort to correct the problem and meet compliance.

The FDA announcement does not specify any reports of related illness to date, but consumers who may have bought a 350-gram package of Bikano Moong Dal (with “Best Used By” date 06/25/25 is asked to refrain from eating it. Those seeking a complete refund may return the item to the point of purchase.

Recall-related questions may be directed to Thal Golden Spices Inc. at 510-429-1797. Calls are monitored Monday through Thursday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
