Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-based Penn Herb Company Ltd has recalled 51 bottles of Nature’s Wonderland Thyroid Formula after learning that the products may be contaminated with the organism Salmonella, reports the FDA.
Healthy individuals with a Salmonella infection typically experience short-term symptoms that include fever, (possibly bloody) diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and pain in the abdomen. However, in those with weakened immune systems, such as young children and elderly people, the infection can turn serious and sometimes fatal. In rare Salmonella infections, the organism enters the bloodstream, leading to more advanced illnesses like “arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
Announced by Penn Herb Company Ltd on June 11, 2024, the recall covers Nature’s Wonderland Thyroid Formula bottles that were distributed via the company’s website (www.pennherb.com) and retail store, and which were purchased by a total of 47 customers. Officials say every affected customer has since received a notification about the issue.
Packaged in white plastic bottles containing 60 capsules each and topped by a blue cap, the Nature’s Wonderland Thyroid Formula label displays the Item #:Sm32x, as well as Lot #:23289A, as indicated in the product photo attached to the FDA announcement.
Penn Herb Company Ltd says it suspended all production and distribution of the product after the FDA’s routine sampling program showed a number of its finished products to contain Salmonella. As of June 12, 2024, the company continues to investigate what may have led to the contamination.
While no related illnesses or other adverse events have been reported to date, anyone who may have purchased a bottle of Nature’s Wonderland Thyroid Formula bearing Item #:Sm32x and Lot #: 23289A is urged to cease all use of the product. The item may be brought back to the point of purchase for a complete refund.
