Brooklyn, New York-based Prime Foods Processing LLC has recalled 477 cases of its Egg Custard Steamed Buns in two varieties because the products may contain sesame, a major allergen not listed on its packaging, reports the FDA.
Those who live with an allergy or serious sensitivity to sesame are asked to refrain from consuming the product to avoid the risk of a major, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.
Announced by Prime Foods Processing LLC on August 9, 2024, the recall covers Steam Buns with Egg Custard and Steam Buns with Egg Custard and Coconut (listed under item numbers PD4180 and PD4190, as well as lot codes #24149 and #24150, respectively) which were distributed to Asian grocery stores within a total of 27 U.S. states between May 30, 2024, and June 28, 2024: Arizona, California, Colorado Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, North Caroline, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington.
As can be referenced in the photos included in the FDA announcement, the products come frozen and in yellow packaging with the code date details (Expiration date 10/2025, along with one of the two lot codes listed above) on the bottom of the side panel. Consumers can also identify recalled products by the UPCs 797803704050 and 797803704869.
Officials say the recall was initiated after an internal discovery: 6 cases of Sesame Steamed Buns were found to have been inadvertently packaged as “Egg Custard Steamed Buns,” which does not disclose sesame as an allergen. Further investigation into the issue revealed that a lapse in the company’s packaging protocols had led to the problem.
While the mislabeling at the source has been corrected, consumers who may have purchased the products under the above lot codes are urged to return the uneaten products and their packaging to the point of purchase to receive a complete refund.
Further questions may be directed to the company at 718-963-2323. Calls are monitored Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
