FDA warns – 4 lots of Al’Fez Natural Tahini in 5.6oz jars recalled due to potential Salmonella contamination

According to the FDA, AB World Foods US, Inc. has recalled four production lots of its Al’Fez Natural Tahini in 5.6-ounce jars because of concerns that the products may contain the organism Salmonella.

While healthy people infected with Salmonella typically experience short-term symptoms like fever, (possibly bloody) diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and pain in the abdomen, the infection can turn serious and potentially fatal in those with weakened immune systems, including young children and elderly individuals. The public should also be aware of rare cases in which a Salmonella infection results in the organism entering the bloodstream; in such circumstances, the individual could be subject to more advanced conditions like “arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”

Initiated by the Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois-based company on July 12, 2024, the voluntary recall covers 5.6-ounce jars of Al’Fez Natural Tahini (UPC 711464506778) that were distributed to retail stores across the U.S. as early as May 26, 2023.

The following lot numbers and corresponding “best before” dates are impacted:

  • Lot # 3031; best before “2024 JL 31”
  • Lot # 3080; best before “2024 SE 09”
  • Lot # 3270; best before “2025 MR 27”
  • Lot # 3297; best before “2025 AL 04”

As shown in the product photos included in the FDA announcement, the lot code can be located on the back of the jars. Consumers should note that only products under the above lot codes are covered by the recall.

While AB World Foods US, Inc. has not been alerted to any reports of illness in connection to the recall, anyone who may have purchased Al’Fez Natural Tahini 5.6oz under the above codes are asked to cease all use of the product. For a complete refund, customers may return the item to the point of purchase.

Anyone experiencing the symptoms listed above and who is believed to have been exposed to the organism should consult a medical professional.

For other recall-related questions and concerns, customers may contact Adifi Burman, an AB World Foods US, Inc. representative, via email at info@alfez.us or by phone at 647-218-0081. Emails and calls are monitored Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

The FDA continues to oversee this recall.
