Lakeworth, Florida-based Villa Nueva Interservices LLC has recalled its 25-ounce bags of Arepa de Choclo/Chocolo due to the presence of milk, a major allergen not declared on the product’s ingredient panel, reports the FDA.
Individuals who live with an allergy or serious sensitivity to milk are advised against consuming the product to avoid the risk of a major or life-threatening allergic reaction.
Initiated by Villa Nueva Interservices LLC on June 11, 2024, the recall covers products that were made available for purchase in retail supermarkets across South Florida. Arepa de Choclo/Chocolo comes in a 25-ounce clear plastic bag with the brand name, Arepas La Mejor, in bold red lettering, across a yellow background. Affected products can be identified by UPC (Universal Product Code) 8 37654 78238.
Officials first took action after learning that the milk-containing product had been packaged and distributed without a declaration of milk as an ingredient. By the time of the June 13, 2024 FDA communication, the ingredient panel has been amended to include the allergen.
While the company has not been alerted to any reactions or illness in connection to the recall to date, anyone with a milk sensitivity is urged not to consume the product. Those seeking a refund or a replacement may return the item to the point of purchase.
Consumers are encouraged to direct any questions or concerns to the Villa Nueva Interservices LLC at 561-480-0132, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
