According to the FDA, Doral, Florida-based Tama Corporation has recalled its “Queso de Mano PAISA,” in 24-ounce containers, because the product may contain traces of the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes.
While healthy people infected with Listeria may only experience short-lived symptoms like “high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea,” women who are pregnant may suffer stillbirths or miscarriages. The infection may also turn serious and sometimes fatal in those with weakened immune systems, including young children and frail and elderly individuals.
Tama Corporation says its emphasis on quality controls from its suppliers allowed the company to learn from a co-packer of the Queso de Mano Paisa that 18 cases of the product that were distributed across Salt Lake City, Utah, may be contaminated with Listeria. As a precautionary measure, the supermarket chain that received the cases were alerted and asked to suspend all sale of the affected products and have them accounted for.
Since then, officials have been able to confirm that the batch does contain a contaminated batch. The affected “Queso de Mano Paisa,” products, which were recalled by the company on April 25, 2024, were only made available for purchase at Rancho Markets stores in Utah. They come in 24-ounce plastic containers bearing the printed lot number 2420104 on the lid, and can be found under “Best By” date May 16, 2024, and UPC (Universal Product Code) 838795000338.
Officials say a preliminary laboratory analysis raised suspicion of a contamination in the above lot sample, and a follow-up analysis later confirmed the presence of the bacterium.
While the company has not received any reports of illness in connection to the issue, all consumers, clients, and distributing partners are assured that safety measures have been established in collaboration with the product manufacturer, the FDA, as well as the USDA to safeguard against similar issues in the future.
Questions may be directed to the company at 305-592-1717, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, or at info@elpaisa.net.
