FDA Warns – 2 varieties of belVita Breakfast Sandwich products recalled due to undeclared peanut

Mondelēz Global LLC, of East Hanover, New Jersey, has voluntarily recalled two varieties of its belVita Breakfast Sandwich because the products may contain traces of peanut, an allergen not declared on the packaging’s ingredient statement.

The inadequate labeling poses a risk to consumers with an allergy or serious sensitivity to peanut, as those vulnerable could experience a major or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product.

Officials initiated the recall on July 3, 2023 after an internal manufacturing inspection revealed that peanut protein residue might have been present on the line used to manufacture the two belVita Breakfast Sandwich varieties: Dark Chocolate Creme and Cinnamon Brown Sugar with Vanilla Creme.

The recall covers both product varieties in a range of sizes and retail UPC codes, all with “Best When Used By” dates prior to, and including February 25, 2024, printed on the side of the carton or pouch.

Dark Chocolate Creme variety:

  • 8.8 oz carton (Retail UPC 0 44000 04328 5)
  • 14.08 oz carton (Retail UPC 0 44000 05723 7)
  • 1 lb 5.12 oz carton (Retail UPC 0 44000 05861 6)
  • 14.08 oz carton (Retail UPC 0 44000 06330 6)
  • 2 lb 12 oz carton (Retail UPC 0 44000 04602 6)

Cinnamon Brown Sugar with Vanilla Creme variety:

Multiple photos of the products in their different packaging sizes can be referenced in the FDA announcement.

To date, Mondelēz Global LLC has received three unconfirmed reports of potential allergic reaction related to the cross-contact.
