Hilo, Hawaii-based Big Island Candies has voluntarily recalled 120 boxes of its Makana Brownie Assortment Box, under batch 60, due to the presence of peanuts, an allergen not declared on the product’s packaging, according to the FDA.
The specific batch was distributed and made available for purchase from December 13, 2023 to December 21, 2023 at the company’s Ala Moana Store, located at 1450 Ala Moana Boulevard, Honolulu, Hawaii.
Individuals who live with a peanut allergy or sensitivity are warned that they could suffer a major, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction should they consume the affected product.
Officials say that a number of items in the box are Milk Chocolate Covered Peanut Butter Brownies, and not the Milk Chocolate Covered Macadamia Nut Brownies as depicted on the label. As a consequence, the label also does not show peanut to be a key ingredient and/or allergen.
Affected boxes can be distinguished by PLU batch code RFFIC 326760, which can be found on the reverse side of the box, printed in its top-right corner.
Big Island Candies first took action after receiving a single report about a consumer’s adverse reaction. The company has not been made aware of any other related incidents following the initial event.
An internal investigation revealed the origin of the issue to be in the packing and labeling stage of the production process. No other batches of the product are covered by the recall, and the affected products were not sold out of any other store.
Anyone who may be in possession of the 10 oz Makana Brownie Assortment box (batch code RFFIC 326760), either through direct purchase or received as a gift, is asked to take it to the nearest associated store for a complete refund or replacement product.
